A Vegetarian "Boar's Head"....

"Roasted and Basted" Table Centerpiece (Made entirely of Papier Mache)

Paper Pig

No piggies harmed in the making of THIS boar's head.....!

Roasted and Basted, Succulent PAPER

Actually, it's probably technically-speaking more of a 'pig head' than a 'boar's head' ('boar's head' just sounding better), but however you want to slice it (ahem ;-)), I am happy to report no critters were harmed in its creation (unless you count trees)....

I confess it had been some time since I'd taken on a paper mache project. As much as I adore the medium and champion all it's glories, it's probably safe to say the toil on my 10' tall Statue of Liberty Project may well indeed have burned me out for a wee bit there. Not that I'd ceased loving the craft or anything -- it's just that after such an ambitious endeavor it appears I needed a break, and an extended one at that, while I concentrated instead on painting and other pursuits. And so it was that I was able to tackle this recent project with a refreshed mindset after my little hiatus. Created upon request as a stage prop for a December 2011 theatrical production, I was really pleased with how my 'Pig Head' turned out -- roasted and basted and succulent in appearance (I'm vegetarian mind...so yeah. Gross.), it made for a very festive, show-stopping centerpiece dish suitable for any grand banquet table. And I approached this project in such a way that I can easily (well, relatively speaking anyway) make more of them, should I receive any additional Pig Head requests (as I repeatedly have for 'Horse Heads' all these many years) down the line (Medieval Feasts, anyone???  Madrigals too, and all that)....

Looks good, Patience. I'm not vegetarian, but I would rather look at a boar's head than eat one!

Ha-ha, thanks Rebecca! And indeed, I might even go as far as to wager that a hefty percentage of avowed carnivores would still prefer to share a table with a FAKE boar's head than a real one, lol....! ;-)

That looks amazing! Believe it or not, I stumbled upon your post while looking for ideas on how to create a papier mache pig's head for our homeschool group's upcoming medieval festival.

How long did it take you to make that?

Hi Cindy, and thanks so much for the note and the nice compliment regarding my pig head :-). I have to say your comment did make me smile, because my very first papier mache project....was a pig head for MY own homeschool support group's Medieval feast, a dozen years ago or so. How funny is that??? ;-) Well that project was a big experiment for me way back when -- first time and all. Since then I've learned a LOT about the medium, so when it came to making this one I had much more experience under my belt. I think that first pig head I made was whipped up in the course of several days -- while this one was built up slowly, well over a week I'm thinking, and made to last. In any case I'd be happy to share with you my technique if you might be interested, and thanks again for writing, Cindy...! :-)

This is EXACTLY what I'm looking for for our medieval themed banquet for cub scouts next month. Would you by chance be interested in selling it?! If so, or if you can help me in any way at all please email me at Selena23@gmail.com. Thanks!

This is phenomenal! My teenage daughter just volunteered to make a paper mache boar's head for her upcoming choir performance (a Greek opera that apparently includes a boar's head). We're strict vegetarians, of course. I think the idea amuses her to no end.

We would need to support it on a broomstick spear of sorts (fresh from the hunt and all that). Do you have any thoughts on that? Or how she would begin? Any advice would be so appreciated.

Hi your papier mache boars head looks amazing. I am having a medieval banquet style party for my 40th birthday and would love to have a go at making one, could you tell me how you made it

I would like the directions in making the boars head, too! Any chance you will share?
Thank you!
